Area Information:

Haines and Skagway are located north of Juneau in the Southeast panhandle of Alaska. Skagway has a population around 1000, which grows to over 2500 in the summer. The economy is based on tourism and Skagway sees multiple cruise ships most days throughout the summer. Haines has a year-round population around 2500. The economy is a mix of industries including commercial fishing, tourism, mining, timber, and city/utility positions. You can drive to both communities from the Alaska/Canadian Highway, about a 4-day drive from the Canadian border with the lower 48. Ferry and airline travel (through Juneau) are also options.

The area is a part of the coastal temperate rainforest stretching up the northwest coast of North America through Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Haines and Skagway are somewhat drier than other areas of Southeast Alaska, but gray “Pacific Northwest” weather is common. We are at the northern end of the Tongass National Forest, the country’s largest at 17 million acres. It is home to brown and black bears, moose, mountain goats, black tailed deer, bald eagles, five species of salmon and a multitude of other wildlife.

Recreational opportunities abound depending on your abilities and cooperation from the Alaskan environment. Locals and visitors enjoy hiking the extensive trail systems, kayaking, canoeing, packrafting, backcountry skiing/split-boarding, trail running, mountain climbing, fishing, hunting, and of course road, gravel, mountain, and fat biking!
